“This is killing me inside, Lily.”

My sister grimaces, placing a hand over mine as we sit together. The outside breeze from the courtyard feels nice against my heated skin. Angry tears threaten to form, but I clear my throat and blink them away before they get the chance.

“I never thought things would get this serious between you and somebody else,” Lily admits quietly, tracing small patterns into my skin. She used to do that a lot when we were younger. “And I definitely never thought this would involve Bremi.”

“You shouldn’t be too surprised.”

“I know.” Lily meets my gaze. “What’s surprising is seeing you like this. You’re not a vulnerable person, Lorcan. You never let things get to you.”

Clenching my jaw, I realize that things have certainly spiraled out of my control. As much as I try to redirect my feelings, I can’t help but feel as if Bremi is choosing obedience to her father over the love we share.

Our love is real, it exists, and it’s potent. Why doesn’t she fight for us? Why am I forced to watch her in the arms of another man simply because of her father’s wishes?

“It hurts to keep going through this,” I say quietly, keeping my eyes downcast. “I want to express my love to her openly and without secrecy. I want us to be a couple who isn’t afraid of what other people will think, but Bremi’s too scared to take that step.”

“Because of her family? Or her father, rather,” Lily corrects quickly. “Her mother seems like the type who’d fight for her independence. I’m not too sure about her father.”

“I don’t even know anymore. Nobody’s in my corner. Except you, I guess.”

Lily smiles. “You say that in such a disappointed way. I should be offended.”

“You know what’s more offensive? Seeing the woman you’re with act as if you don’t exist whenever there’s a public event going on. I’m too scared to approach her when we’re at events like this because her father might see. And then what? He might kill me.”

“No, he won’t.” Lily shakes her head. “Kral is a good friend of the family. He wouldn’t hurt you.”

“If Kral’s such a good friend, then why doesn’t he let Bremi and I be together? It doesn’t make any fucking sense,” I retort, pulling my hand away from my sister’s so that I can run it through my hair. My hands are sweating. “I never thought this would happen to me.”

“Yeah.” Lily laughs dryly, scratching her neck as her eyes drift away. “I figured that something serious was going on the moment you stopped bringing girls to our house. Mother asked me if you were okay.”

“Gods, did she really?” I grimace. I tend to forget that other people can perceive my actions and how obvious they are. “I wanted to prove to Bremi that she’s the only one I want in my life, but what good is that if this keeps happening?”
